A Nelson couple has been charged with causing serious brain injuries to their 17-week-old son.

The baby boy was taken to Nelson hospital by the parents at Labour Weekend and transferred to Auckland's Starship hospital for treatment for a fractured skull.

Doctors have since discovered he has brain injuries.

Police have re-interviewed about 12 people who were in the baby's Motueka home during the long weekend and say they have been frustrated by a lack of co-operation.

However, police have now charged the parents with wounding to cause grievous bodily harm and failing to supply the necessaries of life.

Cassandra Albert, 21, appeared in Nelson District Court on Wednesday and was remanded on bail until 19 December.

The father, aged 30, has interim name suppression and was remanded in custody until Friday. Police say they will oppose any application for bail.
