Fees from foreign students necessary for flying schools

10:33 am on 8 December 2008

Pilot training schools say they're being forced to take on foreign students in order to survive. Course fees have been frozen since 2001.

Trainee pilot numbers have almost trebled in the past three years from 300 to 800 - and many students are from overseas.

The Aviation Industry Association is asking the Government to remove the cap on fees and it also wants the Civil Aviation Authority to review flight training.

The Government is considering the issue, saying that National is committed to retaining limits on fees for publicly-funded courses.
