An Olympic race in which New Zealand rower Mahe Drysdale collapsed after winning bronze in Beijing, was re-run on the Whanganui River on Sunday.

Before a crowd of thousands, Olaf Tufte of Norway again won the 500 metre, single sculls event.

Tufte led from the start, and by half a boat length for most of the race.

In the last 500 metres, he lengthened the gap and won by more than three boat lengths.

Drysdale says he was happy to be able to stand after the race, but admits physically he's a long way off his best and that didn't help.

The event also celebrated the 100th anniversary of a famous race in 1908, when Billy Webb of Wanganui defeated Richard Tressider of Australia on the river.
