Agriculture, forestry targets on agenda at UN meeting

Associate Climate Change Minister Tim Groser says New Zealand will be seeking a different type of target for agriculture at the United Nations Climate Change meeting in Poland.

The meeting in Poznan is the mid-point in negotiations to set up a post-Kyoto Protocol agreement to curb climate change.

Mr Groser says discussions will include offsets for forestry and intensity-based targets for agriculture.

An intensity target for agriculture would, for example, have dairy farmers liable for emissions produced per kilo of milk solids rather than total emissions.

Green Party co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons says the atmosphere does not care how many kilos of milk solids are produced, just the total emissions it can soak up.

She says such targets are simply a way of allowing emissions to continue to grow as a country's economy grows.
