Auckland University plans to become smoke-free

3:29 pm on 9 December 2008

Auckland University is to ban smoking ban on all land it owns or uses, including sporting grounds, from 2010.

The only exception will be smoking for research or experimental purposes under conditions set by the university's ethics committee.

Registrar Tim Greville expects the policy will become self-enforcing, and that the university will not have to be heavy-handed about it.

Mr Greville says if necessary, there will be a penalty for persistent offenders which could include cancellation of enrolment or a fine of up to $1,000.

He says the university will spend the next year publicising the new policy and working out the logistics.
