A New Zealand-based company trying to turn algae into aeroplane fuel expects to perform its first test flight in several months.

Aquaflow Bionomic Corporation says it's produced the world's first sample of synthetic kerosene.

It says a sample has been tested in the United States and meets aviation industry standards.

Company director Nick Gerritsen told Morning Report it harvests the algae from discharge that flows into Cook Strait from Marlborough oxidation ponds.
