Police say head injuries inflicted on a 15-month-old Kerikeri boy were were caused by another person.

The baby was flown from Kerikeri to Starship hospital on Friday night.

He has undergone surgery and is expected to survive, but is likely to be left blind and brain damaged.

Inspector Chris Scahill says medical experts have advised that the injuries are not the result of an accident.

He says it is clear the injuries were caused by another person.
