111 calls answered fast - police

6:10 am on 24 December 2008

Police communications centres say 96% of 111 calls are being answered within 10 seconds.

Superintendent Andy McGregor says this exceeds the international standard of answering 90% of calls within 10 seconds.

Despite an increase of almost 40% in calls between 2003 and 2008, he says the number of calls answered within 10 seconds has risen by 14%.

By the end of 2008, almost 690,000 calls will have been answered, which Superintendent McGregor says is two calls every three seconds.

He says that figure does not account for the one million less urgent calls also received this year.
