A fine Christmas coming up

1:56 pm on 24 December 2008

MetService is predicting a fine, calm Christmas day for most parts of New Zealand.

It says the rain affecting much of the North Island will have cleared by Christmas morning.

The South Island's current fine spell will continue until Christmas, but a weak southerly change on Thursday might bring occasional showers to Canterbury.

MetService says a low is sliding past New Zealand, with a wave of warm air from the tropics bringing rain to parts of the North Island over the next 24 - 36 hours. However, once the low has passed, it looks as though an anticyclone will settle over the country.
