Shoppers spend up as Christmas looms

With only one Christmas shopping day left on Wednesday, retailers says sales are finally picking up after a notable slump.

Retailers saw the highest spending in the lead-up to Christmas on Tuesday, with tills ringing up $200 million worth of sales.

Figures for December show $2.7 billion has been spent in eftpos transactions so far - compared with $4 billion for the whole month last year.

The eftpos company Paymark's head of sales, Paul Whiston, told Morning Report a last minute rush will not be enough to offset this year's slump in sales.

Mr Whiston says the average size of individual transactions is not as big as it was last year.
