The death of a 42-year-old man in Gore on Tuesday night has led to an arrest.
Senior Sergeant Richard McPhail says the police began a homicide inquiry after they found a body outside a house on Main St at about 10.20pm.
The arrest came when the Armed Offenders Squad was called to a house in nearby Hyde Street three hours later.
The police are looking for a white Ford Laser hatchback, which was seen in the Main Street area at about 10pm on Tuesday.
A 43-year-old man has been charged with assault and is scheduled to appear in the Invercargill District Court on Wednesday.
The dead man has yet to be named.
