A farmer was airlifted out of a gorge near Rangiwahia, south of Taihape on Tuesday.

The man suffered minor injuries after falling about 30m down a bank near the bottom of the gorge.

He had been staying with friends, who found him at about 8:30am after he did not return home overnight.

A local police officer was the first to respond before an ambulance was called from Taihape. Altogether, about 30 people from seven different agencies assisted with the operation.

The 58-year-old man is in a stable condition in Palmerston North Hospital.
