Family plans urged by Fire Service

8:05 pm on 7 January 2009

The Fire Service says families must have evacuation plans in place in order to prevent tragedies like a fatal house fire in Mangere early on Tuesday.

Four people died when the house in Nicola Place caught fire about 12.45am. Three people are in Middlemore Hospital - one of them in a serious condition.

The Fire Service says it started in the kitchen.

Chief fire officer Larry Cocker says people need to make sure they know where to go when there is an emergency in the house.

He says it seems the people who died were awake at the time of the fire, but were unable to find their way out of the burning house.
