The maker of a documentary depicting Christchurch as a no-go area at night is standing by his portrayal of the city.

The documentary, which was broadcast on German television last week, shows police struggling to tackle the problem of boy racers in the city after dark.

Director Peter Kunz says the existence of so many boy racers is interesting to German viewers and the segment is an honest reflection, as part of a 90-minute documentary about New Zealand.

However, police say the documentary is sensationalist.

They say many youths were "acting up" for the camera and describe the boy racer issue as no worse in Christchurch than in other cities.
