Second brother's body recovered at Fox Glacier

9:49 pm on 15 January 2009

The body of Akshay Miranda, one of two Melbourne brothers killed in an ice collapse at Fox Glacier last week, has been recovered.

Mr Miranda and his brother Ashish were killed while trying to photograph the glacier from beyond a safety barrier. Their bodies were buried by tonnes of rubble.

While Ashish's body was recovered shortly after the incident, it was mid-Thursday, a week after the accident, before conditions allowed Akshay's body to be located and brought out.

It was found on a gravel island about 10 km downstream from the toe of the glacier.

The body of Akshay Miranda will now be taken to Christchurch for a post-mortem before being released to his family.

Constable Tony LeSueur says the brothers' parents have been advised of the news, and are likely to hold a joint funeral.
