Police recovered the body of a man from the side of Te Mata Peak near Hastings on Sunday.
They say the body appears to have been there for several days, but they have no idea of the man's identity.
Police say the man was 1.7 metres tall, and was wearing a grey t-shirt and three-quarter length jeans.
They are seeking help from the public.
