Driver in fatal bridge crash travelling in wrong lane

3:05 pm on 26 January 2009

A woman driver killed in a crash on the Auckland Harbour Bridge on Monday morning was travelling in the wrong direction in the city-bound lanes, police say.

Waitemata Serious Crash Unit senior constable Karl Bevin said the black Toyota hatchback the woman was driving hit a barrier about 3.30am.

Police are calling for anyone who may have seen the crash near Onewa Road to come forward.

They have spoken to two witnesses and are now focussed on the movements of the car and where it entered the motorway.

Mr Bevin said someone must have seen the car travelling in the wrong direction in the central city area.

Police have yet to make contact with the woman's next-of-kin.
