Pre-school cost cuts stopped

6:49 am on 1 February 2009

A cost cutting exercise to reduce class sizes for pre-schoolers has been stopped by the Government.

It was among a number of regulations due to come into effect this year, which were put on hold when the new Government came to office.

Most will go ahead, but some involving creches are to be discussed further.

Education Minister Anne Tolley says a plan to change the maximum number of children per supervisor from 15 to 14 has been rejected.

She says reducing class sizes won't help increase participation in early childhood education.
