As many New Zealanders dragged out their raincoats and umbrellas once more on Thursday, Aucklanders baked in the heat.
The temperature rose to 32.4 degrees Celsius, the equal hottest temperature for Auckland since records began.
The last time it was that hot was in February 1872.
A climate expert from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, Jim Salinger, says the heat was slightly more bearable after the humidity dropped from 90% to 50%.
However, it was still 22 degrees Celsius in the early hours of the morning.
Dr Salinger says temperatures are taken at various locations throughout the city and it is possible information on Friday will show that the 1872 record has been surpassed.
