Research to uncover extent of leaky house problem

7:13 pm on 25 February 2009

The Government has ordered research on the number of leaky homes in need of repair.

Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson has asked the Department of Building and Housing to carry out the research, which was last undertaken in 2005.

In a letter to the mayors of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, Mr Williamson said that sorting out the legacy of leaky homes was one of his top priorities.

He said the Government would decide on the best course of action once it had a clear picture of the extent of the problem.

The department is expected to complete the research by the end of May.
