Wall Street stocks dropped to new lows on Monday after a new bailout was announced for AIG.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid below 7,000 points for the first time since 1997, falling 209.47 points (2.97%) to 6,853.46 by 1545 GMT as losses accelerated in morning trade.

The Nasdaq fell 34.78 points (2.52%) to 1,343.06 while Standard & Poor's 500 index shed 24.34 points (3.31%) to 710.75.

Last week, the Dow fell to its lowest level since 1997 and the S&P dropped to its weakest since 1996.

The falls came after the US government announced $US30 billion in more aid for AIG to stave off a collapse of the insurance company which has revealed massive new losses.
