Changes to rocklobster catch limits

8:58 am on 4 March 2009

The rocklobster industry has accepted changes to catch limits.

Otago's limit has increased by 45% to 209 tonnes and Southland's by 5% to 1110 tonnes this season.

It's estimated the increases will see these regions benefit by a combined figure of up to $8.6 million.

However Gisborne's catch limit will drop 9% to 293 tonnes and Wellington's by 40% to 460 tonnes.

The Rocklobster Industry Council says the Minister of Fisheries is conservative but pragmatic.

The Minister says it's likely that catch limits will be eased in Gisborne and Wellington in coming seasons if monitoring shows significant recovery.
