Private prisons liked by Maori Party

The Maori Party says private prisons could minimise reoffending.

The Government is considering letting prison management to private sector contractors.

The Maori Party says new legislation could be a chance for prisons to be tailor-made for Maori to help reduce the number of inmates who leave prisons and reoffend.

MP Hone Harawira says it presents an opportunity for Maori to deal with their own.

He says private prisons could prove successful in much the same way as tailor-made programmes for Maori education.
