West Coast mayors tell Labour to listen to local people

7:51 am on 17 March 2009

West Coast mayors say the Labour Party will have to prove it cares about the region if it wants to win back the electorate.

The party's leader, Phil Goff, deputy leader Annette King and 23 of the party's MPs begin a three-day visit to the area on Monday.

Labour lost the West Coast-Tasman seat at the last election for only the second time since the party was formed.

Grey District mayor Tony Kokshoorn says Labour has paid the price for losing sight of local concerns.

The mayor of Westland, Maureen Pugh, says Labour will need to start listening to West Coast people if it wants to regain their trust.

Labour says it will work hard to regain the West Coast-Tasman electorate.

The party's leader Phil Goff says MPs will hold public meetings and visit schools, hospitals, factories and local councils during the three-day visit, in order to listen to voters.
