Canada denies entry to British MP

Canada has barred British MP George Galloway entry into the country on the grounds that he is a threat to national security.

A Canadian government spokesman said on Friday that Immigration Minister Jason Kenney would not overrule an earlier decision in light of Mr Galloway's backing for Hamas.

He said no special treatment would be given to "a man who brags about giving financial support" to Hamas, or "who offers sympathy for Canada's enemies in Afghanistan."

Hamas - the movement that governs the Gaza Strip - is a banned terrorist organisation in Canada.

Mr Galloway was formerly a Labour Member of Parliament in Britain, but was expelled from the party for urging British soldiers not to fight in Iraq. He subsequently formed his own party and was re-elected to the House of Commons.
