Pilot who found crashed car was 'following hunch'

9:42 am on 23 March 2009

A helicopter pilot says he was following a hunch when he discovered a car crashed off the Rimutaka Hill Road between Wellington and Wairarapa in which a body was found.

It is thought the body is that of Lower Hutt businessman Stephen Adams who went missing two months ago.

The car was found at the bottom of a steep bank on the Wairarapa side of the Rimutaka Hill Road.

On Saturday afternoon, helicopter pilot Maurice Wooster was in the area on another job, and says he took the opportunity to check out a nagging feeling about the case.

He says he could see a car upside down, but had to drive back later and climb down to the site to confirm there was a body inside.

The recovery of the body took most of Saturday night. Police have yet to formally identify the body.
