A mentally ill teenager who was detained in a police cell after assaulting her mother has been moved to a Christchurch hospital.

Emma Sweenen, 18, is intellectually impaired and was detained in a Nelson police cell on Friday following the assault.

On Monday she was bailed to Hillmorton Hospital, a special care facility for mental health patients.

The teenager has the mental age of an 11-year-old and had been referred to a residential care facility for people with behavioural issues, but was discharged last week.

The Nelson-Marlborough District Health Board was concerned for her safety after she was detained in the cell.

Police have arranged transportation for Ms Sweenen to Hillmorton Hospital.
