A former member of the Cook Islands parliament says Pacific Islanders must put family before church as the recession threatens jobs.
Fanaura Kingstone, now living in Tokoroa, says church ministers must rethink how they seek donations from families, many of whom are under pressure.
But a minister with a big Samoan congregation in the west Auckland suburb of Avondale says changes are already being made.
Reverend Asora Amosa says he will not have names and donations read out in church.
He says he expects people to support family before the church and not give to make themselves look better before others.
