Traffic delays mar start to Easter holidays

9:02 pm on 9 April 2009

Easter holidaymakers ground to a standstill on Auckland's motorways on Thursday, as police urged motorists to drive safely throughout New Zealand.

Several minor nose-to-tail incidents on the Southern motorway caused traffic to crawl from the city to Drury on Thursday evening.

Traffic travelling north out of Wellington was also delayed.

Sleety snow on the Desert Road in the central North Island tested drivers.

Police said motorists should drive to the conditions and watch their speed this weekend.

MetService predicted the country would have reasonably clear weather over Easter, with showers clearing up by Good Friday.
