Protesting call-centre workers to go back into talks

4:40 pm on 11 April 2009

Auckland workers who say they have been illegally locked out of a market research call centre will resume mediation with their British employer next week.

More than 30 workers who are members of the Unite Union spent Saturday protesting outside the office of Synovate in south Auckland.

Union spokesperson Matt McCarten says Synovate's New Zealand managers were instructed to lock the workers out after they turned down a pay increase of 20c an hour.

He says the workers have been told they will stay locked out until they accept Synovate's offer.

The protest action was peaceful, Mr McCarten says, and a police presence there was unnecessary.
