Security Council to meet on North Korea on Monday

2:48 pm on 12 April 2009

Mexico says the UN Security Council will meet again on Monday to discuss a rocket launch by North Korea and is likely to condemn the action.

Mexico currently chairs the council and has called the meeting.

The five permanent Security Council members and Japan agreed on Saturday on a draft statement condemning North Korea's launch of a missile on April 5 and are in favour of fresh sanctions against the country.

The text calls for the council "to adjust the measures imposed" in a resolution to establish further sanctions against the North, which were introduced in 2006 after a nuclear weapons test.

Mexican Ambassador Claude Heller said on Saturday the draft statement "is an excellent basis for a consensual and clear message by the Security Council."

Part of the draft resolution states:

"The Security Council condemns the (missile) launch, which is in contravention of Security Council resolution 1718 (2006)."

"The Security Council demands that the DPRK not conduct any further launch."

The missile, known as the Taepodong-2, crashed into the sea after a flight of about 3,200km. The missile is designed to carry a warhead as far as Alaska.
