A sudden hailstorm made driving conditions treacherous in Wellington on Wednesday morning.
Police say there were drifts hail of up to 5cm on streets in southern parts of the city. Patrol cars lost traction in the suburbs of Newtown and Kilbirnie.
MetService says it's recorded 190 lightning flashes over central New Zealand since 5am, particularly over Wellington.
