Farmers check damage after flooding

Farmers in parts of Canterbury have been checking damage to their properties after flooding in parts of the region.

Roads were closed and traffic was diverted on Sunday when the Rangitata and Waitaki rivers flooded, inundating some farmland.

John Murray, who farms sheep and beef at the Wolds Station in the MacKenzie Basin says about 100mm of rain fell at his property over three days.

Mr Murray says despite the heavy rain no stock has been affected, and the damage has been restricted to fences and some roading.

John Vernie, who farms just over 200 hectares at Arundel where the Rangitata River breached its banks, says pasture has been ruined, though he has not lost any stock.
