Release of Veitch files seen as making justice system irrelevant

The lawyer for former sports broadcaster Tony Veitch says the police have been totally irresponsible and have rendered the justice system irrelevant by releasing their investigation files.

Veitch has given up attempting to stop publication of information obtained through the Official Information Act relating to a recent assault prosecution.

Veitch last month pleaded guilty to assaulting his former partner.

Lawyer Stuart Grieve says more than 300 pages of the police file, have been obtained by some media under the Official Information Act.

Mr Greive says the material is not evidence and should not be taken as representing a true account of what happened.

He describes the police's actions as contributing to a serious erosion of the justice system.

Canterbury University Associate law professor Ursula Cheer says it is unusual for the police to release such information.

However, she says this does not set a precedent and the police are protected under the Official Information Act, as long as they acted in good faith.
