Court dismisses kahawai quota appeal

4:49 pm on 28 May 2009

The Supreme Court has has dismissed a last ditch appeal brought by recreational fishers over the setting of kahawai fish quotas.

In 2007, the High Court found the Fisheries Minister's decision to allow the kahawai species into the quota management system in 2004 and 2005 was unlawful.

However, a Court of Appeal in June 2008 on that decision went in favour of commercial fishers but with some consideration for recreational fishers.

Richard Baker of the New Zealand Big Game Fishing Council says the dismissal is the end of the road for their campaign.
