A political opinion poll shows the Labour Party is well ahead in the race for the Mt Albert electorate.

The by-election for the seat, left vacant by the former Prime Minister Helen Clark, is to be held next Saturday.

The One News Colmar Brunton poll has Labour's candidate David Shearer with a comfortable lead, on 59%.

National's candidate Melissa Lee has 21% support, but the Green Party co-leader, Russel Norman is close behind, on 15%.

ACT MP Jon Boscowen has just over 3% support.

The poll of 500 voters had a margin of error of 4.4%.

Labour has held the seat since its formation in 1946.
