Service sector still in the red

The services sector in New Zealand is still struggling but the latest survey shows it does not appear to be getting worse.

The BNZ Capital-Business New Zealand Performance Services Index stands at 46.2 in May, up 2.5 points from the previous month and is the 14th consecutive month of contraction.

A reading below 50 indicates that activity is declining.

BNZ senior economist Craig Ebert says most firms are still struggling and they should be cautious as the economy remains fragile.
