Parents centres face financial shortfalls

New Zealand's main provider of childbirth education courses says 18 of its 52 groups face financial shortfalls next year due to Budget cutbacks in adult education.

Parents Centre, a non-profit organisation, says many of its programmes are funded though Adult Community Education spending.

Chief executive Viv Gurrey says the Government needs to urgently review ways of paying for ante-natal and post-natal education classes for new parents.

Mrs Gurrey says she feels district health boards ought to step up to the mark and subsidise the courses which focus on the health and wellbeing of parents and babies.
