Men killed in collision with train named

Police have named two people killed in a collision between a train and a car near Rakaia in Canterbury.

James Allan Byron, 28, of Rakaia and Jonathan Wards, 31, from Methven died when the Holden they were travelling in collided with a Kiwi Rail train at a non-alarmed level crossing on Wednesday.

A third person was taken to Christchurch hospital.

Police say inquiries are continuing into the crash.
