The first of a series public meetings to consult the public on what level of greenhouse gas emission cuts New Zealand should make by 2020 takes place in Wellington on Monday.
The nationwide consultation will consist of nine public meetings, hui with Maori and talks with lobby groups.
The Government aims to produce a figure New Zealand will take to December's meeting on climate change in Copenhagen, intended to reach an agrement that will replace the Kyoto protocol.
Many countries have already declared their emissions reduction targets for 2020, ranging from 3% below 1990 levels to at least 20% below that mark.
Climate Change Minister Nick Smith says the Government likely to opt for a target range rather than one figure, which a number of other countries have done.
He says the Government will include the feedback from the public meetings with official advice and views of scientists and economists to come up with targets that New Zealanders are happy with.
