Farmers markets seek to guarantee produce

The organisation representing farmers markets has launched a new form of certification to guarantee the products on sale are locally grown by stall holders.

Farmers Markets NZ says the move follows concern from markets that some unscrupulous stallholders have been selling produce they haven't grown themselves.

Chairman Chris Fortune says it is important certification is established now so that problems can be avoided in the future.

He says the guarantee will be open to those markets where at least 80% of their stallholders are certified under the scheme.
