Retailers angry at free parking cuts

3:23 pm on 6 July 2009

Dunedin retailers are angry at the removal of most of the free car parks in the central city, saying their businesses will suffer.

The Dunedin City Council's new parking strategy came into effect on Monday, cutting the number of free carparks from 730 to 50.

The council hopes pay and display charges will encourage people to park for shorter periods, making it easier to find parking in town.

Otago Chamber of Commerce chief executive John Christie says he has been assured the council will consider complaints.

Mr Christie will chair a meeting between concerned retailers and council representatives on Thursday.
