House fire fatal for man, 21

Foul play has been ruled out in the case of a fatal house fire in New Plymouth on Friday night.

Ricky Manson Neill, 21, died in the fire at the Bulteel St house at about 7.40pm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Coward says the police believe the fire occurred in Mr Neill's room while he was asleep.

He says there's no sign of any foreign substance having been in the room and, after initial investigations, the police are comfortable that the fire is not suspicious.

The investigation continues, however, and a post-mortem will be held on Monday.

As many as nine people were on the property at the time of the fire, the cause of which was still unknown on Saturday night. But some of Mr Neill's flatmates have told the police that people were drinking there before the fire "came out of the blue".

Mr Coward says Mr Neill's flatmates say he was already in bed because he had to start work early the following morning.
