International visitor numbers drop in Auckland

Swine flu and the global financial crisis have resulted in the number of international visitors staying in Auckland dropping significantly.

Statistics New Zealand says there was a 14% drop in overseas visitors who stayed in Auckland during May, compared with the same month last year.

Hotel Council board member Matt Taplin says swine flu has been a major contributor to the slowdown in international visitors.

He says this is in addition to a decline due the global financial crisis.

Mr Taplin says the biggest decrease of visitors is from China and South Korea, who make up a large proportion of tourists at this time of year.

He says Auckland's problems are not unique - other countries are facing similar declines.
