9:33 am on 17 July 2009

Despite the economic downturn, internet search engine Google has earned $US1.48 billion in the three months to 30 June, compared to $US1.25 billion a year before.

The BBC reports revenue rose 3% for the period at $US5.52 billion. Just over half - 53% - came from outside the United States.

Shares gained 1% to $US442.60 on Thursday but later dropped 2.4% in after-hours trade.

Paid clicks - which include clicks related to ads served on Google sites and the sites of AdSense partners - were 15% higher year-on-year, but 2% less than in the first quarter.
