Police in Rotorua have arrested a man over an incident in which gunshots were fired at an elderly couple and an attempt made to run their truck off the road.
The couple were travelling towards Rotorua at about 4.30am on Saturday from the eastern Bay of Plenty when a red utility vehicle suddenly appeared and tried to ram their vehicle.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Loper says a 51-year-old Rotoma man was arrested after members of the Rotorua and Tauranga Armed Offenders Squad searched his home on Saturday night.
He was to appear in the Rotorua District Court on Monday facing a variety of charges including firearms and driving offences.
Charges arising from the search will also be laid, including cannabis and explosive charges.
