Field never stepped out of line, says former secretary

3:18 pm on 20 July 2009

A former secretary of Taito Phillip Field's has told a High Court jury he never stepped out of line.

The former Labour Party MP denies 35 charges of bribery and corruption as an MP, and obstructing or perverting the course of justice.

The Crown says Mr Field accepted work at several of his properties from Thai nationals in return for giving them immigration assistance.

Mr Field's lawyers are continuing to outline their case on Monday.

Elizabeth Jones-Atoanga was Mr Field's former secretary at his Mangere electorate office in South Auckland and sat in on the meeting between Mr Field and Thai tiler Sunan Siriwan.

Ms Jones-Atoanga says there was never talk about Mr Siriwan carrying out work on Mr Field's property in Samoa and she would have walked out if there was.

She says that would have been stupid thing to raise.

Ms Jones-Atoanga told the court that over the years she had known Mr Field, he had never stepped out of line or done anything wrong.
