Critics of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran have stayed away from a formal ceremony in Tehran endorsing his election victory.

Several senior figures were absent from the event, at which the President received the endorsement of the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Mr Ahmadinejad is due to be inaugurated for his second term in office on Wednesday. He was declared to have received 63% of the vote.

Two former presidents stayed away from the endorsement ceremony, as did the defeated candidates, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Kharroubi.

Since the election on 12 June, thousands of Iranians have held mass demonstrations described as the largest since the Islamic revolution in 1979.
