A lawyer for a Texas man sentenced to life in prison says he's been released after 23 years behind bars because DNA tests have proved his innocence.

Alba Morales, who works for the Innocence Project group, says a judge has released Ernest Sonnier, 46, on bond.

Sonnier was convicted for a rape on Christmas Eve 1985.

According to the Innocence Project, 241 inmates in the United States have been found innocent due to DNA testing since 1989. Of these, it says 38 were in Texas.
