Convicted murderer's lawyer threatened

6:34 pm on 9 August 2009

The high profile lawyer of convicted murderer Clayton Weatherston, Judith Ablett-Kerr, has received a high number of abusive threats, according to her co-counsel Greg King.

Ms Ablett-Kerr had attempted to plead the controversial defence of provocation in the trial of the former Otago University lecturer last month.

Greg King wouldn't elaborate on the nature of the threats received by Ms Ablett-Kerr but reports suggest that there were death threats and that her car had acid poured over it.

There was outrage when Clayton Weatherston's defence team attempted to lower his charge to manslaughter over the killing of his ex-girlfriend Sophie Elliot by pleading the partial defence of provocation.

But Weatherston was later found guilty of murder and the Government has now said it will change the law to prevent the use of the defence.

Mr King says he hasn't been the target of abuse and believes Ms Ablett-Kerr's targetting is evidence of sexism in society.

Ms Ablett-Kerr could not be reached for comment.
